There was a 4 issue movie prequel comic by IDW that gave the backstory of the movie in the 24 century and explains about the ship and Spocks involvement.

I get involved in arguments like this all the time, maybe i can help with all 4 groups:
1: You yourself said it "get the story moving forward without worrying about details"
2: The narada is big, old and designed to live in the 24th century. Nothing anyone had could stand against 24th century shields and toredoes.
3: Time travel? Blame J J Abrams and crew for their method of "resetting" the Original Series so he can take it in their own direction. I do not agree either. Engineering was filmed in a budweiser plant, no ST fan I met likes it either
4: Chekov was young in the original series, when standards were different in 1965. Now we expect someone to be 18 before going through an academy, so here everyone else is 22-25 ish and Chekov was kept at 17 and an officer. seems screwy to me too, then again.... "get the story moving forward without worrying about details"

I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I have seen and heard, I can think of one or two other things that bug me -- enough where I don't know if I want to see the movie, and where I don't know if I want to see another movie made.
