I’ve been at my new contract job for about a month now. My new overlords have been patient and kind. And I’m actually learning stuff. Which could be the problem.
I’ve been doing graphics so long it was very comfortable and easy for me. It wasn’t always great, but it was understandable and I usually knew where I stood. All this web design and development has been stressful and makes me want to cry out like a Monty Python Gumby.
They say change can be very hard but is good for you. They also say it harder for an older brain to learn new things. I wish I had my son’s teenage brain. Actually… he needs it more than I do, and it’s not really working correctly yet. Guess I’ll keep my old one.
Hi Gang,
If you’ve been paying attention (and why would you, really?), you’ll remember that I landed a contract web design gig right after my latest layoff. I’ve been averaging one every three years or so. My last two job hunts lasted six and three months, so I’m feeling lucky this time around. I’m just keeping my head above water at my new job since I don’t have a big web-dev background. My new masters are being very patient and kind to me.
My last official act with my previous employer was signing my termination paperwork. If you’ve ever been laid off, you know what I’m talking about. It’s the paperwork that states you and your employer both “agree” to this separation, and that you can’t sue them, or divulge company secrets, and that you can’t say anything bad about your former employer, and that if you don’t “agree” to all the conditions in the document you won’t get your severance payment. I did notice that there was nothing in the document that states they can’t say anything bad about me. I don’t know if my former employer is spreading rumors about me but you never know.
And the struggle continues…
I forgot.
With my layoff and quick hiring (so quick I don’t have time for all my “things to do while looking for work” projects), and my May 1 birthday (a big one), I had forgotten May 1 is also the birthday of One Small Step. I started it on May 1 so I would always remember (that worked well). Doug and Qwerty have been in the minivan for four years now. I’m even earning some money from the strip! Some kind soul donated $5 for a wallpaper. That’s $1.25 a year! Say Yay!
Happy Birthday to me and OSS.

Sorry I haven’t posted the strip the last few days. The lay-off fairy has given me another visit so I’ve been been ramping up my job search. My latest resume and samples are on my personal site, www.joekandra.com. I’ll still be posting OSS strips and who knows, maybe I’ll have time to finish that OSS book.
