So you want to know if a Lava Lamp will work on Jupiter. You don’t just wonder about it and move on. You don’t just try some lame back-of-the-envelope figuring. You build an experiment in your living room! You have to admire this determination and lack of caring about wimpy safety issues. This is the BEST Monty Python reference in the Wall Street Journal today. Actually, it’s the only Monty Python reference I know of in the WSJ. The story about a mistaken foreclosure is on the web site but, unfortunately, this caption is not.I don’t normally read the WSJ, it just shows up on the driveway some days. I wonder how many WSJ readers will get this? Probably more than you’d think. Click on the pic to see a larger size.

Desktop? Notebook?

I have a problem. Actually I have several problems but I’d rather not scare people away, so I’ll only talk about my computer problem. My computer problem is “what kind of Mac should I buy”?

Some background. I’ve worked on Macs off and on since 1989 and love them (the first Mac I used was a SE30 running System 6). I’ve worked on PCs as well and they are pretty good too. I haven’t had a Mac at home in several years and it’s time. I have a Dell 8500 that’s going on 7 years old. I bought it after a layoff and a PC made more sense at the time. I have a big birthday coming up. I’m not going to tell you how old but it rhymes with “nifty” (or “shifty”) and, by gum, I’m a-gittin’ me a MAC. Now which one?

My choices are the 15″ MacBook pro or the new 27″ iMac. Both are the same price and both have their pros and cons.  I know notebooks outsell desktops now , but that 27″ monitor is pretty appealing. . . . Hmmmm. . . . .
