Jellybaby?

on October 17, 2008

Lately I’ve been reading some of Rich Morris’ wonderful “The 10 Doctors” web comic. All 10 of the Doctor’s incarnations are pulled together for a wild ride through sci-fi techno babble. I was a fan of the Doctor mostly back in the old Tom Baker days but have seen it every so often over the years. I like how the BBC brought it back with a bit more attention and money the last few years. The pages are in pencil and I love the loose sketchy feel to them and I really appreciate Rich’s drawing prowess. I’ve added it to my links page. Check it out at comics.shipsinker.com.

Avast! There be Star Pirates here.

on October 9, 2008

“The Earth is destroyed – space miners stationed in the Asteroids struggle for survival. Gangs of Star Pirates loot old hulks, scavenge resources, attack and raid each other’s ships and fight for dominance of the stars.”

I’ve been looking over the game “Star Pirates” for a few days and I think it’s pretty cool. I am by no means a “gamer”. I have no overly developed thumbs and played D&D ONCE. I remember I named my character “Tarawa” and that that he died pretty fast. I also was around when “Pong” was new so you can see where I’m coming from.

Star Pirates reminds me of the “Escape Velocity” series of video games mixed with the old text based “you are in an empty room” type of game. You start as a lowly spaceship captain with a crew of yourself and use your luck, bravery, and cunning to build up your wealth, your weapons, your ship, and your reputation. It’s a text based browser game so you don’t have to download anything and you don’t have to hope the guy in the next cube doesn’t hear the explosions and weapons fire from your twitch shoot-em-up, a big advantage for lunchtime gaming.

Star Pirates also has a big community built right in. I mean, it’s on the web, right? I’ve only scratched the surface but I see vast amounts of communications between players. That’s one thing you don’t get from a video game unless you bring your Xbox 360 to work with you.

Oh, and before I forget, Star Pirates is FREE. Free is good. I like free.

I plan to keep playing so I can build up enough experience to take on my son. He kills me in 5 seconds every time we play “Halo 2”. I’m going to show him the game doesn’t always go to the faster thumb.

As the dust settles

on October 7, 2008

Well, the new site has been up for almost a week and hasn’t broken yet. Say Yay! The dust is settling and I can get my mind back to the strip itself and hopefully build my strip pad back up. I can also look into additional projects like a book(?), free-lance, and more.

I’m also excited about a web design program I’m starting later this month through Boston University. One must keep current.

In the “life sucks” category, my wife lost her job last week. She’s a very talented writer/editor/manager and saved her company hundreds of thousands of dollars and made the product much better. They essentially said BFD and showed her the door. She’s actually relieved to be out of there (when she’s not a little panicked about paying bills and the economy in general), so it’s on to bigger and better things. (…hmmm, maybe I should bring back my old donations button…hmmm…)
